The distance of this planet from the Earth makes its apparent size very small, so it is challenging to study with Earth-based telescopes. Voyager 2 visited Neptune when it flew over the planet on August 25, 1989; Voyager 2 remains the only spacecraft to visit Neptune. The emergence of the Hubble Space Telescope and large ground-based telescopes with adaptive optics has recently allowed more detailed observations from a distance.
